Shoulder replacement surgery or shoulder arthroplasty is a surgical procedure where a damaged shoulder joint is replaced with artificial implants made of metal and plastic components
You may need shoulder replacement surgery when the shoulder is badly affected in conditions such as osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, post-traumatic arthritis (after a fracture or injury), fractures of the shoulder, failed previous shoulder surgery.
The surgery is taken under the general anaesthesia. A cut is made in the front of the shoulder through which the joint is opened. The joint surfaces of both the ball and the socket is prepared and artificial implants are inserted. Once the stability is achieved, the wound is closed. The arm is supported in a sling.
The difference between total anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement lies in the design of the implant. Anatomic shoulder mimics normal anatomy, i.e., metal ball on humerus, plastic socket on scapula (glenoid). With reverse shoulder replacement, the ball and socket orientation is reversed, i.e., ball on scapula, socket on humerus.
The cost of a shoulder replacement surgery starts from approx 3.5 Lacs onwards.
The success rates for shoulder replacement surgery are generally very high, especially when done for the right reasons and followed by proper rehabilitation. About 85–90% of implants last 15-20 years which is equivalent to hip replacement surgery.
