Complex Scapula Fracture Successfully Treated with Surgical Fixation

A patient presented with severe shoulder pain, restricted arm movement, and visible discomfort following a high-impact traumatic injury. Clinical examination and radiographic imaging revealed a complex scapula (shoulder blade) fracture involving significant displacement of the bone fragments.

Scapular fractures are relatively uncommon and are usually associated with major trauma such as road traffic accidents, falls from height, or sports injuries. Due to the complexity of the shoulder girdle, timely diagnosis and proper surgical planning are critical for restoring full function.

Diagnosis

Initial X-ray imaging confirmed:

  • Displaced fracture of the scapula
  • Involvement of the glenoid region (shoulder joint area)
  • Structural instability of the shoulder girdle
  • Severe limitation in shoulder mobility

The fracture pattern indicated that conservative treatment would not provide optimal recovery, and surgical intervention was recommended.

Surgical Management

The patient underwent Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) for stabilization of the fractured scapula.

Procedure Included:

  • Precise realignment of fractured bone fragments
  • Internal fixation using specialized orthopedic plates and screws
  • Restoration of shoulder anatomy and joint stability
  • Careful preservation of surrounding muscles and soft tissues

Post-operative X-rays showed excellent alignment and stable fixation of the scapula.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Following surgery:

  • Pain levels reduced significantly
  • Shoulder stability was restored
  • Physiotherapy was initiated for gradual range-of-motion recovery
  • Functional rehabilitation focused on strength and mobility restoration

The patient demonstrated steady improvement and was able to regain daily functional activities with minimal discomfort.

Outcome

The surgery resulted in:

✔ Successful fracture stabilization
✔ Proper anatomical restoration
✔ Improved shoulder function
✔ Reduced long-term risk of joint stiffness and arthritis
✔ Faster return to normal lifestyle and activities
